The Winners!

In Fall 2021, ReadUP is hosting an essay competition based on Jamie Margolin’s Youth to Power. Submitted essays will be an op-ed about a current civil rights or social justice issue. The audience for this op-ed will be your fellow students at Lone Star College-University Park.

Submissions should follow the op-ed guidelines in Chapter 3 of Youth to Power. These guidelines include:

  • Topic addresses a current civil rights or social justice issue
  • No more than 750 words in length
  • A clearly stated main point
  • Specific supporting arguments and recommendations
  • Avoiding jargon and passive voice
  • Proofreading for typos and grammatical errors
  • Appropriate acknowledgements of counter-arguments

We highly recommend reviewing the guidance and examples in Youth to Power before submitting.

  • First prize: $100 + Winner will read winning essay at the Jamie Margolin author visit
  • Second prize: $50
  • Third prize: $25

All three winners will also be invited to have lunch with Jamie Margolin during the author visit.
