Meet the Writing Coaches

John Edwards

Specialties: Creative Writing, Literature, Brainstorming, Structure/Organization

Education: MFA in Creative Writing; MA in English; BA in Communication

John is the author of Angel in Aisle 3 and is currently at work on his next novel. His writing awards include the Richard M. Devine Memorial Fellowship and two Maier Awards. John, a native West Virginian, and his wife spend their time between Kentucky and Texas with their pets. He is Level III certified.

 

 

 

Leslie Fink

Specialties: Grammar, Rhetoric, Analysis, Pre-Writing, Research

Education: B.A. in English (Professional Writing) from Penn State University

Prior to joining the Writing team in 2015, Leslie worked in a law office preparing and editing legal documents. In her spare time, she volunteers for a local dog rescue and enjoys exploring the area with her husband and their twin boys. She now works Saturdays only, by appointment.

 

 

Michael Anne Keaton

Specialties: Rhetoric, Critical Analysis, Research, Organization

Education: MA in Anthropology, BA in anthropology

Before joining LoneStar College - University Park, Michael Anne tutored students at Louisiana State University as well as students from the University of Houston. She is currently pursuing a degree in engineering from the University of Houston.

 

Louise Keene

Specialties: Grammar, Composition, Rhetoric, Argumentation, American Literature

Education: MA Rhetoric from Texas Woman's University; BA English from Texas Woman's University

As well as tutoring community college students in all levels of English, ESOL, and literature, Louise has taught college English and literature for over 20 years and has worked part time in the Lone Star College System since 2007. Louise is an avid reader, a J. R.R. Tolkien fan, and a dog lover. She is Level III certified.

 

 

John Lopez

Specialties: ESOL, Spanish, Citizenship 

Education: MA in Education; BA in English/Spanish with Teacher's Certification

John is an experienced coach in both English /Spanish who began coaching at the Willow Case campus over 15 years ago.  He is a retired public teacher of English/Spanish.  He enjoys listening to music and reading materials about living a better life. He is Level III certified.

 

 

 

Amber Pommier-Johnson 

Specialties: ESOL, Pre-writing, Brainstorming, Organization, Critical Analysis, Psychology

Education: BA Interdisciplinary Studies from UHD, minor in Psychology

With over 17 years of experience, Amber's heart for helping others achieve and succeed is showcased in her profession as an English and Writing coach. Her Interdisciplinary Studies degree emphasis was in Communications, which opened up an avenue for coaching ESOL students, while considering their need to learn the language in the context of American culture. When she's not tutoring, Amber enjoys spending her time with her husband Chris and their three sons watching movies and sipping on local specialty coffee. She is Level III certified.

 

Jan Saenz

Specialties: Creative Writing, Brainstorming/Pre-Writing, Critical Analysis, Essay, Poetry, Fine Arts

Education: BA in Theatre

Jan is a writer and serial thrift shopper. Her love of literature sprouted from her involvement in Theatre, enjoying play analysis, character development, and constructive criticism. After graduating college, her passion shifted to writing, working mostly in contemporary fiction. Her work has been published in various online literary magazines, and she is currently working on her third novel. She enjoys helping others gain confidence in their abilities, and she loves encouraging students to read and write about topics that interest them.

 

Vanessa Perales

Education: AA

Vanessa is a book lover who is running out of space in the small bookshelf that her dad made for her. She loves to write and aspires to publish her own book one day, but right now she’s busy trying to figure out how life works as an adult. She’s a bit shy, so if you really want to get her talking you should ask her about anime or if she thinks Pluto is a planet or not. Dog lover and insect hater, Vanessa’s goal as a tutor is to help students feel proud of their writing and tell them that in order to improve, it just takes practice.

 

Lyndsey Hill

Specialties: History, Research, Brainstorming/Pre-Writing, Organization

Education: BA in History from Texas A&M University

Lyndsey is an avid history buff. Her fields of study include European history, United States history, and Women’s and Gender History. In addition to tutoring part-time in the Writing Lab, Lyndsey also works at a law firm where she drafts and edits legal documents for a globally ranked public finance firm. Outside of work, Lyndsey spends most of her time at the dog park with her dogs, Remmy and Georgia.
