Common Library Words & Phrases, Explained

Barcode (Library Barcode)
The number for your library account. It is 14 numbers long and begins with 23136... at Lone Star College. You get your library barcode number when you make a student ID card. You can also get library cards with different barcode numbers at the public libraries. You can use your Lone Star ID card to borrow things at Harris County Public Library locations, too.
Catalog
The online website that lets you search the library collection to find books, movies, and more.
Circulation Desk
The front desk of our library. Where you go to get help with your library account, to borrow things, and to return what you've borrowed.
Citations
A way of showing where you got information from. In college, citations follow specific formats. MLA Style is the most common. Listing your sources as citations helps you avoid plagiarism.
Course Reserves
A special collection of textbooks (or anything a professor is using in their class) that can be borrowed for free for a short time. Unlike regular library books, you usually can't take Course Reserves home with you.
Librarian
A type of library employee with an advanced degree who is an expert at helping you find books, articles, and more as well as help you avoid plagiarism and create citations. At the UP Library, librarians can be found in their offices or at a reference desk.
Library
A place that provides access to books and research materials. You can also study here. This access is free! Students often confuse the library with the bookstore. The bookstore sells or rents textbooks for money.
Place Hold
When you place a hold, you are requesting a library item for yourself. If the book is available right away, a copy will be sent to UP for you to pick up. If someone else has, or if other people have placed holds too, you join the line to wait for the book to be available.
Renew
When you borrow something from the library, you can make the time you have to keep it longer by "renewing the item." The default time to keep something is 2 weeks. If you renew it once, you would keep it for 4 weeks. If you renew it twice, you get to keep it 6 weeks.
