Chicago Style (18th ed.) - Notes & Bibliography Format

Guide and examples for citations in Notes-Bibliography CMOS.

Notes for Websites

Include as many of the following elements as possible when citing websites: page title or description; page author/owner/sponsor; site title or description of site as a whole; site owner/sponsor; date of publication or revision; and a URL.

Names of websites are usually written without any formatting (no quotes or italics), unless it shares its name with a work that does normally get italicized.

  • Blogs are treated liked periodicals and italicized.
  • Social media platforms are treated like other websites (no italics).
  • Wikipedia, despite being a reference work, is not italicized.

An initial "the" should be lower-case when mentioned narratively and not italicized.

When in doubt, use plain formatting without quotes or italics.

Clarifying examples from CMOS 18, 14.103 and 8.193-194:

  • Google; Google Books; Google Scholar
  • Wikipedia; Wiktionary
  • Vox; BBC; BBC News; a Vox article; but a story published at BBC.com but an article published on BBC News; articles published online by Fox News, CNN, and the BBC*
  • Merriam-Webster Dictionary but Merriam-Webster.com

  • YouTube; Facebook; Twitter; X; LinkedIn
