Assignment | Unit 1 Research (Le): Library Databases

BIOL 1409 | Prof. Michael Khoa Le (Fall 2025)

Warm-Up

Practice identifying keywords (and their synonyms) -- incredibly important skills for effectively seeking information!

This will help prepare you to navigate the advanced search function of the library databases.

Search the Library Collections

Discovery Search

Individual Collections

The big discovery search is great -- until it's not. Sometimes it's overwhelming (because it's looking everywhere), sometimes it's just not as good as looking directly in a specifc collection.

These databases contain both peer-reviewed journal articles and mainstream news/magazine articles (and even more stuff beside that). Be sure to use your filters to exclude what you're not looking for!
Why so few? Because these are a LOT more specific. The mixed-collection databases on the first tab have more!
News/magazine and other sources can be found readily through a search engine. But if you want to leverage the advanced search or need to get around a paywall, here's some dedicated resources.

Find More Databases

Even More Databases:

Consider which disciplines apply to your specific topic when choosing your databases.

Accessing the Databases

Access online library materials through the library databases!

To access the databases locked icon (same icon that displays by the LSC-limited access resources) from off-campus, you will be prompted to enter your LSC email/password or your 14-digit library barcode.
