Assignment | Researched Argument Paper (Black, Trainer): Getting Started

ENGL 1302 Dual Credit | Ms. Black & Mrs. Trainer (Spring 2024)

Your Assignment

Your Goals:

Argument Papers

In an argument paper, you will take a stance: there is a position or change or result that you are pushing for. Your thesis statement will clearly lay out that position.

Example

Oatmeal raisin cookies are the best cookie variety due to their healthy ingredients, sophisticated flavor profile, and the consistency with which they are produced.

From that one sentence, you know my paper is about oatmeal raisin cookies, that I think they're the best, and that you're going to be reading about their ingredients, flavors, and consistent production.

This is different from an analysis paper, where you'd keep a neutral tone and just lay out the facts.

Example

Cookies are a versatile sweet treat that offer nearly infinite options in flavors, though the classics like sugar, chocolate chip, and oatmeal raisin are the most common.

Personal Pronouns

Just because you're taking a stance and pushing an argument, though, doesn't mean you will directly address your reader!

You'll still be writing academically, which means all your "I think..." or "It's my belief that..." will stay out of your writing.

I think oatmeal raisin cookies are the best flavor.

The "I" is implied.

Research Starters

These collections will give you topic overviews, histories, and viewpoint articles to help you explore the opposition!
