Due to the March 14 executive order to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), among others, state library services are facing budget cuts. TexShare, operated by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) and through which Lone Star College is able to license the majority of our databases (along with many other college and public libraries across Texas), receives about 30% of its funding from the federal government, which means a significant impact to account for.

Although a May 6 injunction was issued to pause library funding cuts, TexShare had to figure out contract renewals by June 1 (and of course, even with a pause and recall of many IMLS staff, there's no guarantee for what will be available 6 months from now). The decision for what to cut was based on available data like usage, sustainable pricing, and subject coverage.

The LSC Libraries Collection Management Committee is investigating replacements for the resources most meaningful to our community, particularly business and perhaps biography and literature collections. Any replacements would be paid for by LSC in addition to our already recommended budget.

We will share more changes as they happen.

Good news:

We will be gaining two new resources through TexShare, despite this. Newspapers.com Texas Edition, a popular resource for history and genealogy research,  will be available June 1. We will also have access to Gale Presents: Peterson's Test and Career Prep starting September 1.
