Happy Juneteenth to All at LSC-University Park!
Juneteenth, also known as "Freedom Day", "Emancipation Day", or "Second Independence Day", is our nation's newest national holiday. It is celebrated annually on June 19th. First celebrated in Texas, it's a celebration of the day on June 19th, 1865 when General Granger and Union troops arrived in Galveston and ordered that all slaves be freed, "in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free” (Galveston History). It came more than 2 years after President Abraham Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 freeing all slaves in the Confederate South.
Juneteenth was signed into law last year on June 16th by President Joseph R. Biden. The campus will be closed to commemorate and celebrate this important holiday.
Emancipation Park in Houston will be the site of a major celebration from June 18th through June 19th, and it's free.
