You can help focus your Google searches to weed out some of the junk (or at least, to focus on specific sorts of websites) by limiting what web domain comes back in your results.
For example, limiting your results to .org can help you target your search towards organizations:
Using .gov will search government sites. You can also use .edu to get results from university websites.
You can even search within a specific site using this same strategy, e.g. specifying site:ed.gov rather than the more generic site:.gov.
