NPR's Throughline podcast has done an excellent episode looking at the history of Ukraine-Russian ties and the complex cultural relationship between the two countries which goes back centuries.

Language Note:

  • Kyiv not Kiev
  • Ukraine not "the Ukraine"

Kiev and 'the' Ukraine are the Russian variations on the names, while the updated versions reflect the Ukrainian pronunciation and preference.
