Depression is a drag. Everyone who has it experiences it differently, but we all agree that it sucks. Sometimes, however, I wonder if people who don’t have it understand – like really truly understand – just how overwhelmingly painful it is.

Abundia is a community of women who come together to support each other in living lives of fat acceptance and Health at Every Size. What began as a small gathering in 1994, has become a yearly retreat and on-going community of love and support. Women who identify as fat or as of size are welcome to join us at our retreat for educational workshops on self-esteem, HAES (Health and Every Size), size acceptance, fashion, healing art, movement and more!

Since 1996, we have been helping people develop balanced, joyful self-care and a relationship with their bodies that is guided by love, forgiveness, and humor.

Mental illness does not discriminate on the basis of identity or background. Why, then, are people of color often silenced, ignored, and excluded from the discussion?

Self-care can be such a buzzword these days, but what’s often not discussed are the race, gender, and class dynamics behind the concept. When we’re expected to take care of others emotionally and physically, taking time, energy, and resources for ourselves can feel shameful. In the United States, women report higher rates of stress in their lives than men and people of color report higher rates of stress than white people—there are a lot of factors for why, including the stress of racism and discrimination.

Rest for Resistance strives to uplift marginalized communities, those who rarely get access to adequate health care or social support. This includes Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Pacific Islander, Asian, Middle Eastern, and multiracial persons.
